In recognition of Rare Disease Day on February 28, Boehringer Ingelheim sponsored TV and radio interviews with John Morthanos, who has idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and his physician Dr. Erica Herzog of Yale University to raise awareness of IPF. In September 2012, John was one of the lucky patients with IPF to receive a single-lung transplant. Although IPF is the leading reason for lung transplants, the procedure remains uncommon because patients are either too old, too ill or don’t survive long enough to undergo the procedure.
